Published on Mon Mar 14 12:30:00 GMT 2011THE Courier campaign for Marie Curie nurses has been boosted by an incredible £50,000 from a mystery donor.
Charity bosses were stunned by the generosity of the anonymous benefactor who had seen our appeal in the Courier.
The gift brings the appeal total to £60,737 since the launch in December.
The Courier, together with the charity, hopes to raise £80,000 to fund Marie Curie nurses in Calderdale, who help people with terminal illnesses who choose to die at home.
Calderdale Marie Curie nurse Joanna Bond, who is the face of the Courier appeal, spoke of her joy at the donation.
She said: “What can I say! The support just keeps coming in.
“We are absolutely thrilled with the response to the Calderdale Appeal, and the generosity of its readers.
“A huge thank you to the anonymous donor of £50,000.
“This is just amazing! It will make such a difference to so many people’s lives while in the terminal stages of cancer and other life limiting conditions by enabling us to provide more hours of care, and more nurses.
“All donations, however large or small make a difference. Please help to make that difference and keep them coming in.”
Tracy Calcraft, Marie Curie fund-raising manager, added: “This is a remarkable gift towards the appeal from a local benefactor who wishes to remain anonymous. This gift is testimony to the generosity of Courier readers and a great boost to the appeal.”
Courier editor Tim Robinson said: “This is an amazing amount of money. It’s great news and shows how close this appeal is to the hearts of Courier readers. But we still need to raise nearly £20,000 so keep your donations coming in!”
Last year, the nurses in Calderdale provided more than 3,479 hours of nursing care and the demand for their services is increasing.
This year the charity needs to raise £80,000 so the nurses can continue to provide care completely free of charge to people in Calderdale.
